DBR/HUG Exhaust Gas Treatment systems
The increasingly strict regulations regarding the reduction of exhaust gas emissions and in particular NOx emissions (IMO regulations) are leading to the demand for “clean” engines.
Marine engines in vessels with keel-laying dates on or after January 1, 2016, must comply with specified nitrogen oxide emission limits in ECA zones under the new IMO Tier III rules. Based on current technology, the easiest way to achieve this is using a SCR exhaust gas purification system.
DBR/HUG Exhaust Gas Treatment systems can meet the demand for “clean” Marine Diesel generator sets and comply with the ECA zone IMO Tier III rules to reduce NOX emissions by providing the generator sets with an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. With the SCR system, Nitric Oxide (NOx) is converted into water vapor and Nitrogen (without oxide).
The reduction is carried out by reacting the NOx with urea or ammonia, which must be added to the exhaust gas.
To avoid soot particles on deck, a so called Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) element will be placed before the SCR (Combined system). Diesel engines produce a variety of particles during combustion of the fuel/air mix due to incomplete combustion. The composition of the particles varies widely dependent upon engine type, age, and the emissions specification that the engine was designed to meet.
The particulate filters are based on a ceramic honeycomb structure. The exhaust gases flow through the porous honeycomb walls, and this process traps over 99% of even the tiniest particles between 20 and 300 nanometers.
In-house Class Society certification of the DBR/HUG SCR-system can be carried out, during the Factory Acceptance Test of the generator package at DBR premises.
